The key to any good move is proper packing and protection. Take a minute to find out how you can make sure that all your belongings are handled safely during your move. When you're finished reading this page, go to our text-only version of these packing tips to print a copy without graphics.

- If you plan to do your own packing, start well in advance of your moving day to avoid the last minute rush and strain.
- Use sturdy containers for all of your possessions, and make sure you have lids on all of your containers. Bluebird's retail outlet can provide you with all of the high qaulity supplies you will need.
- Never pack articles above the tops of containers.
- Do not wrap anything in newspaper. The print will rub off and potentially damage your goods. Bluebird can supply you with blank newsprint.
- Use fragile stickers on cartons to alert you and your professional mover that these items require special attention and care.

- Books and records should be packed on their edges in small cartons, never weighing more than 40 or 50 lbs.
- Pack any table lamps in cartons, and make sure to pack lampshades in separate cartons by themselves.
- Pack small items such as salt and pepper shakers in small boxes, then place them in a larger container. Do not ship small items loose.
- Do not wrap furniture with paper, rope, twine, or cloth. Leave furniture as it is in your home. Your professional mover will be able to handle your furniture faster and easier this way, than if it is placed all in one room.
- When packing china, place heavy pieces on the bottom of the container and make sure all flat pieces are packed on their edges.
- Tie or tape brooms, mop handles, and curtain rods in bundles.
- Have your large, delicate and valuable items such as mirrors, glass table tops, and paintings packed and transported by a professional mover.
- Refrigerators and freezers should be defrosted and emptied prior to moving. Make sure you remember to remove any trays and racks. Consult a professional mover about shipping your deepfreezer.
